I’ve written before about the Reinvention Portfolio framework that I’ve developed to help people plan for a long and fulfilling life. It’s a new mental model that brings together a mix of largely intangible assets that will help you renew yourself and be resilient to ups and downs.

Revitalization Assets are an important part of the Reinvention Portfolio. They provide you with the energy and motivation to transform yourself when required. Think of friends and family, but also personal health and fitness as restorative resources. Along with practices (yoga, mindfulness, reading) and places (your favorite cafe, for example), they will keep you younger longer or simply help you to regularly recharge your batteries.

If you want to be healthy, vibrant, and productive into your 80s, you need to start good habits in your 20s — and keep at them in your 40s and 50s. People are extremely time-pressed in those latter decades, and often busy professionals who are also parents lament that their health and friendships have suffered as a result.

Spending time with close friends and maintaining strong, healthy bodies are not indulgences but investments.

These types of activities not only revitalize you physically after the rigors of a long day or week — they put one more deposit in your physical and emotional bank account for use in the years and decades to come.

So the next time you think you don’t have time to hit the gym or keep that dinner date with your mate, re-frame it as a 401(k) contribution to your future health and vitality. You’ll be making a wise investment.
